2011 and onwards

In 2012, came Sonic 4: Episode II, with Tails playing a role that was described by upset fans as a "glorified powerup", and due to lack of popularity, a third episode was never made. In 2013, came Sonic Lost World with Sonic's gameplay reinvented, but it didn't sell well. Fast forward to now and we have two upcoming games: Sonic Forces, the 3D game, and Sonic Mania, the 2D game with fan-favourites Tails and Knuckles being playable. Which one is more popular? Here is the most viewed video of each game: Sonic Mania has 5.5 million views, Sonic Forces has 2.8 million views, and Super Mario Odyssey has 14.7 million views

Following in the 3D entries came Sonic Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. After Sonic 2006, SEGA wished to refocus on Sonic's gameplay, and made Sonic Unleashed with Sonic the Hedgehog and his Werehog counterpart as playable characters. Following Unleashed, came Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, both with only Sonic as a playable character.

A blue hedgehog was born and ready to give Mario a run for his money on the SEGA Genesis. After the hugely popular Sonic 1, came Sonic 2 with the introduction of an orange two-tailed sidekick, Sonic CD with the introduction of a pink hedgehog friend, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles with the introduction of a red rival, all sharing the same success. The end of the decade would see Sonic and his friends transitioning to 3D in the popular Sonic Adventure series for the SEGA Dreamcast.
